Precision Wire EDM Forging Die Insert for the Forging Industry
The project highlighted here was manufactured for a customer in the forging industry. The forging process requires that heated (red hot) metal be forced through the die under pressure and then cooled, forming the desired part. This extreme environment requires the use of special metals to allow the die to hold up under these conditions.
We manufactured this gear style forging die from H-13 Rc 55-57 tool steel, it featured dimensions of 8.00 in thickness, an outside diameter of 15.00, and inside diameter of 9.005, with a .086 degree taper over the 8 of thickness. The die was machined on our state of the art Mitsubishi FA20 wire EDM, using MasterCam X. The finished 400 pound die met tolerances of +/-.001", which was verified by in-house dimensional inspections. This bottom fit insert die was manufacture with a 3 to 5 day lead time.
